At the end of this week, I will be posting my first editorial of the semester. This one discusses an international issue that is equally as important as almost all foreign policy news and national news that is taking the headlines every day.
Leaders need to begin banning the manufacturing and the use of harmful plastics throughout the world.
I ventured onto several different organizations’ web sites to find out specifics about plastic manufacturing and what it is doing to our environment.
“The amount of plastic manufactured in the first ten years of this century eclipses the total produced in the entire last century”
There is an abundance of articles from scientific studies that show the harmful effects that these plastics have on the planet.
The most obvious pollution issue from plastics comes from plastic ending up in landfills; with a wide percentage range of waste being recycled throughout the world, there is still a significant amount of plastics ending up in landfills.
In 2016, France became the first country to ban plastic cups and plates. I will go more into the details of this ban in the editorial and I will discuss some of the specific states in the US that have made progressive efforts with plastic bans.
