An open letter to the governor.

Dear Gov. Pete Ricketts,

I am currently a junior at the University of Nebraska Kearney and I read today that you have invited the NRA to hold their convention in Omaha, NE.

I understand that the NRA will not be moving its convention to Nebraska, but the idea of what you have proposed is a problem. Nebraska is a Republican state, but there is a whole generation of younger voters, like myself, that began getting involved in politics in 2016 and are a part of the people that you are supposed to represent.

After the school shooting in Florida, I wrote a blog post discussing gun control and my views on it. In your initial tweet to the NRA, you talk about Nebraskans loving our constitutional rights.

I don’t dislike my constitutional rights and I don’t think that we need to “get rid of all the guns” or “give everyone guns”; however, when do you think it will be time to take a stand on gun control? How many shootings do we have to experience before you will tweet, “@NRA – It is time for better background checks and more safety processes to getting a gun. We Nebraskans love our safety!”? You have the power to do something, Gov. Ricketts, and if you don’t, we will.

I wasn’t able to cast a vote in 2014, but I’m able to vote now. You are up for re-election this year and I don’t plan on letting this be an easy race for you and I’m sure I am not the only one.

It’s time for a governor that represents all of the people in Nebraska and cares about our well-being and safety.

Signed,

A concerned Nebraskan
