“Sex Sells”: The lazy way to advertise.

This topic hits close to home for me because it’s in the field of what I may be doing for the rest of my life. Basically, the advertising world is chock full of sexism.

I completely understand that “sex sells”, but so does a lot of other tactics. There are too many companies using women in ads purely for their looks. The main issue is that the ads are focused on specific body parts to portray these women as being simply boobs, a butt, a mouth, legs, etc. This process of objectifying women has gone on for far too long and isn’t improving all that much.

There are a lot of companies who have amazing sales without these advertising campaigns. Food companies don’t need sexy women on their ads to sell a cheeseburger. I believe that objectifying women to promote something is lazy advertising. There is nothing creative about it.

  1. This is such a great post. In this day and age, people seem to think that sexualization of women in ads has gone down or vanished since the 1900’s, but it hasn’t. Like you said, it’s the lazy man’s advertising method when they have no creativity.
