Damn.

I never realized that Pulitzer prizes went to all kinds of forms of artistry and journalism.

When I heard that Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer for his album Damn., I was pleasantly surprised. This is the first time that a Pulitzer  prize has gone to a modern and popular list of songs, a rapper, and a black artist; so there were a lot of firsts with this years Pulitzer in music.

Lamar winning this Pulitzer was well deserved. His album takes on issues that are relevant in society and he is an influential artist, to say the least.

In an article from The Guardian, Lamar is praised for his incredible work along with the compositional aspects of his music. It’s obvious that the nations political state over the last few years has helped push Lamar into the spotlight; however, his music has hit on topics such as police brutality and Black Lives Matter, while still being hit songs. He has earned this prize and I am glad to see that the Pulitzer prizes have recognized other forms of artistry on a deeper level.

  1. Had not really been familiar with KL before this, other than seeing he had sponsored showings of “Black Panther” for inner-city kids.
